The Perfect Astrophotography Camera for Beginners
The ASI585MC Pro is a unicorn in the astrophotography world. With a built-in cooling fan, it has the ability to keep noise low over long exposures like its much more expensive counterparts, the ASI533MC Pro and ASI2600MC Pro. Thanks to its small sensor, it's also capable of high frame rates necessary for planetary & lunar astrophotography. Being able to do both deep sky & planetary imaging well is rare in the astrophotography world. Despite this versatility, the price makes it one of the most affordable cooled astrophotography cameras available on the market, making it a perfect choice for beginners.
4K Resolution Sensor
The ASI585MC Pro uses the Sony IMX585 CMOS sensor. As one of ZWO's latest OSC planetary cameras, it features a large sensor format of 1/1.2", a high resolution of 3840 x 2160, and a surprisingly amazing characteristic of zero amp glow! The pixel size is 2.9µm. In 12-bit mode, it produces 46.9 FPS with super low readout noise!
USB 3.0 & 256MB DDR3 Memory
The ASI585MC Pro comes equipped with three USB ports: one USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports. The USB 3.0 port can be used to connect the included USB 3.0 cable to an ASIAIR or computer for deep sky or planetary imaging. This port also allows for up to 47fps at full resolution, which is ideal for use when photographing planets, the Moon, or other solar system objects. It also features 256mb of DDR3 memory which serves as a cache to ensure stability during long exposure deep sky imaging, making sure frames aren't dropped.
The two USB 2.0 ports are designed for attaching external accessories such as an Electronic Filter Wheel (EFW), guide camera, Electronic Automatic Focuser (EAF), or other accessories. Having these ports on the camera is desirable as it ensures good cable management on top of the telescope to prevent cables snagging on the mount or other gear.
Large Full Well Depth
The ASI585MC Pro has very low readout noise and a large full well depth of 40ke-, which is nearly 3x that of the previous generation IMX485 sensor. This allows for a larger dynamic range, as bright highlights (like bright stars) will not blow out or overexpose as easily.
Camera Curve: Low read noise, high dynamic range
The camera has a built-in HCG mode, which can effectively reduce readout noise at high gain and allow the camera to maintain the same high dynamic range as it does at low gain. When the gain is 252, the HCG mode is automatically turned on and the dynamic range reaches a level close to 11bit. The readout noise is as low as 0.7e.
Quantum Efficiency
The peak quantum efficiency of the ASI585MC Pro is 91%. This figure means that up to 91% of the incoming light is recorded into the final image, which is a very high percentage thanks to today's CMOS sensor technology.
No Amp Glow
ASI585MC Pro exhibits zero amp glow, no matter how long the exposure and how high the gain value. Since it is implemented directly at the hardware level, it does not require software control.
